The rapid construction of new - and expansion of existing - high containment laboratories creates unprecedented demand for consistent, reliable, and effective staff training delivered by highly qualified individuals through sources that are both nationally and internationally recognized. Regulatory agencies, laboratory workers, and the surrounding community leaders insist on effective and efficient training programs to prepare personnel to work in these environments. However, training employees to work in BSL 3 and BSL 4 necessitates compliance with a wholly unique set of requirements in addition to basic laboratory protocol.
The National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP), a partnership between the Division of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland is responding to this need by providing a professional certificate for biosafety professionals. There are two curriculum tracks: Operations & Maintenance and Biosafety & Biocontainment. Each certificate program provides evidence that the participant has completed standardized required coursework as well as a work practicum, and a final project. As an IACET Authorized Provider, NBBTP offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under IACET guidelines.
